Chapter 22

The orange Kush was better than Rell had expected. It was so good that he got lazy and instantly changed his mind about going shopping and going to a hotel. Instead, he drove to Mama's three-bedroom house on 13th and Avers.

Maria was asleep on the couch when he walked in with Tamera at his side; Jah and Tirzah stayed out front with a group of his friends.

There was a half empty bottle of Seagram's gin beside an ashtray on the carpet near Maria's head. Dora, Jah's newborn daughter, was sleeping in a swing next to the sofa. Scandal was playing on the TV.

Tamera snickered as Rell led the way to his bedroom.

“What's so funny?” he asked.

“She's out of it,” Tamera said.

“You can get off my OG.”

“I'm not making fun of her. Just saying. She looks like she went to sleep feeling good. I need some of what she had.”

“Bullshit. You think you do.” Rell unlocked his door, pushed it open, and stepped aside to let Tamera in first.

The bedroom hadn't changed much since his teenage years. He still had the same twin bed he'd gotten for his fifteenth birthday, though the red sheets and pillows were brand-new. The walls were off-white from back when he and Jah had painted them a few years back. He had a bunch of shoe boxes stacked in his closet, each one containing a pair of shoes that he kept as clean as possible. Scattered around his TV were DVD cases, mostly porn. The same old CD player he'd had since high school was on his dresser, and stacked up beside it were rap and R&B CDs, though he rarely listened to them. On the windowsill was an ashtray full of blunt roaches and two bullets that went to the .45-caliber Smith and Wesson he'd had before he went to prison.

Tamera sat down on the foot of the bed while Rell locked the door. He went straight to his dresser and pulled out the top drawer.

Underneath a pile of t-shirts he had a 30-shot clip for the .40-caliber Glock on his hip.

He took the 16-round magazine out of his Glock and slid in the 30-round.

Tamera shook her head, but she didn't say a word. The incident at the apartment building on Douglas called for drastic measures, and Rell could see the approval in her eyes. Like him, she just wanted to be safe.

He put the gun on his dresser, turned on the CD player, pressed play on a 90's R&B album, and took off his sweatshirt as Shai's “If I Ever Fall In Love Again” started. Studying himself in the mirror, he ran a thumb and a forefinger across his eyebrows.

“Oh, please.” Tamera cracked up laughing. “You know you need to stop. Who you think you is, Chris Brown? Boy, if you don't sit down somewhere.”

“Quit frontin'. You love this face,” Rell said, biting his bottom lip and looking at her reflection.

Her eyes went to the ring on her finger.

“Hope you know I need that back,” Rell said.
